Exosocial networks

Updated August 5, 2026

Created by conduits between primary sources of anima to allow balanced euphoric interactions.

Expanded explanation

An exosocial network is what a set of connections amounts to when no centre has formed, and Marsh lists it as one of the three types of governance alongside endosocial martyrdom and endosocial tyranny. The other two move anima to or from a figure at the centre. This one has no centre and works by anima connections, which is what balanced means in the definition. Each interaction settles rather than accumulating a credit somewhere, so nothing collects and no position of advantage is created. This is why she can call it a type of governance at all rather than the absence of one. An arrangement in which every interaction balances is already deciding how resources and energy move, and it does so without anyone holding authority over anyone. The behavioural signature is worth noting because it distinguishes the network from a group in practice. Opportunities for expansion are met by an exoself with excitement, while for anyone trapped in an endogroup the same opportunities produce disloyalty guilt, anxiety, boredom and punitive repercussions. A network gains from a member reaching outward and a group loses by it, which is the clearest practical test available. Integrity is defined partly in these terms, as strength of personal membrane and exosocial network, so the network is not merely a person's environment but a component of what makes them robust.

In Heather Marsh’s words

Marsh counts the network as a form of governance rather than as the absence of one.

Examples

Governance without a centre
Balanced interactions decide how energy moves without anyone holding authority, which is why this counts as a type of governance.
The outward reach test
A network gains when a member connects elsewhere and a group loses, which distinguishes them in practice.
Part of integrity
Strength of personal membrane and exosocial network together are what make a person robust.

How others use it

Network governance is an established field in public administration, studying coordination without hierarchy across organizations, and Elinor Ostrom's work on commons institutions documented self-governing arrangements that are neither markets nor states. Anarchist and horizontalist traditions have long argued for federated association over centralized authority, and Manuel Castells built an account of contemporary society on the network form. Marsh's version is distinguished by the balance criterion. Network governance research asks whether coordination is achieved, whereas she asks whether each interaction settles, which rules out networks that coordinate perfectly well while accumulating advantage at particular nodes.
