Masculinism

Updated August 5, 2026

Male endo-idealism.

Expanded explanation

Two words, and they are a cross-reference rather than a description. Endo-idealism is adherence to the laws of endoreality attributing all virtue, ownership, victimhood and credit to the endo-ideal and all vice, guilt and punishment to the negative image, so masculinism is that machinery running with the male position at the centre. Nothing further needs saying because the structure is generic, which is Marsh's point in defining it this way. Male, wealth, industrial and corporate endo-idealism are the same apparatus with different occupants, and understanding one supplies the others. The economy of the definition also carries an argument about remedy. Since the problem is the machinery rather than the occupants, rejecting masculinism is what creates change, and promoting feminism instead creates a power struggle with masculinism and leaves minorities such as transgendered people still fighting for their rights. Rejecting all the isms is her stated alternative. She treats male endo-idealism as the template rather than one instance among equals, since what happened in the sublation of women scaled up to every other transcendental endogroup, and the liberation of women where it exists is a symptom of some wider group being sublated. Masculinist theory is the epistemic arm of the same thing, theory based on research that only includes men or is presented from an exclusively male point of view or sets the experience of men as the normative standard.

In Heather Marsh’s words

Marsh defines the term by cross-reference, which is itself the argument that the structure is generic.

“it is rejecting masculinism that will create change”

Examples

Generic machinery
The same apparatus runs with male, wealth, industrial or corporate occupants, which is why two words suffice.
Why rejection rather than opposition
Promoting the counterpart creates a power struggle and leaves everyone outside both still unprotected.
The template claim
What happened in the sublation of women scaled up to every other transcendental endogroup.

How others use it

Masculinism is used in several ways, sometimes for advocacy of men's interests and sometimes, in feminist scholarship, for an ideology of male supremacy, and it overlaps with androcentrism and with patriarchy without being identical to either. Patriarchy is the most common term for the system Marsh is naming and carries a large literature, from Gerda Lerner's history of its creation to Sylvia Walby's structural account. Marsh's choice of masculinism over patriarchy is deliberate, since patriarchy names rule by fathers and describes a particular historical form, while endo-idealism names a mechanism that persists after the fathers are gone, which is what she says fraternity accomplished.
