Universal Reality

Updated August 5, 2026

1. Reality which is outside the subjective viewpoint of the endo-ideal and is not based on the laws of endoreality. 2. Reality which is outside of macroscopic experience.

Expanded explanation

Two senses and they answer two different distortions. The first is social. Universal reality is what is there when the laws of endoreality are not applied, meaning when virtue and guilt are not being assigned by position and the endo-ideal's viewpoint is not being taken as the view. The second is physical. Universal reality includes what lies outside macroscopic experience, which the endofilter excludes so that a person can conduct their life without being overwhelmed. Both senses matter to the framework and the pairing is deliberate, since an endoreality is a magical suspension of universal reality required in order to block guilt and egalitarian force, and the endofilter performs the same suspension at the level of perception. Keeping universal reality as a real and separate thing is what distinguishes Marsh's position from relativism. An endoreality is a distortion of something rather than one construction among many, which is what allows her to say that a public unable to think of a principle without aligning it to an endo-ideal is trapped, and what allows cognitive dissonance between endoreality and universal reality to count as evidence rather than as disagreement. Her illustration comes from accounts of death, where one person described the experience as more than real, absolute reality, which she reads as universal reality outside all endofilters. The framework's claim about psychology follows the same line, since institutions in the business of creating a binary reality are producing endoreality rather than describing anything.

In Heather Marsh’s words

Marsh keeps universal reality as a real and separate thing, which is what distinguishes her position from relativism.

“The creation of endogroups is a magical suspension of universal reality”

Examples

Two suspensions
Endoreality suspends it socially by assigning guilt and virtue by position, and the endofilter suspends it perceptually.
Not relativism
An endoreality is a distortion of something real rather than one construction among several, which is what makes dissonance evidence.
Absolute reality
The description of a death experience as more than real is what Marsh reads as perception outside all filters.

How others use it

Realism and its opponents have argued for centuries about whether there is a mind-independent world and whether we could know it. Social constructionism after Berger and Luckmann describes shared understandings coming to feel objective, and strong constructionist positions decline to rank constructions against any external standard. Critical realism, associated with Roy Bhaskar, holds that a real world exists independently while our knowledge of it is socially produced, which is close to Marsh's position. Her framework requires realism to function, since without a reality outside the group there would be nothing an endoreality could be a distortion of and no basis for the framework's own claims.
