Anger-Fear Symbiosis
The paired emotional dynamic in which one person's anger and another's fear feed each other, forming and holding endogroups together. Marsh calls it the most common method of endogroup creation.
Expanded explanation
Anger and fear lock into a self-perpetuating cycle. The angry party dominates, the fearful party submits, and each response deepens the other: dominance draws out fear, fear invites more dominance, and the pair settles into a stable arrangement rather than burning out. Marsh treats this as the emotional engine underneath group formation. Where the contempt-shame symbiosis marks who is inside a group and who is beneath it, the anger-fear symbiosis is what assembles the group and sets its hierarchy in the first place, which is why she ties it directly to the seizure of power she calls the guardian coup. It is not a glossary headword. It is defined and developed in the body of The Creation of Me, Them and Us.
In Heather Marsh’s words
Marsh gives the anger-fear symbiosis unusual weight in the origin of endogroups.

The Creation of Me, Them and Us
Examples
- The strongman and the frightened
- A figure who projects dominance and a following held by fear form the basic anger-fear pair that founds an endogroup.
- Fear that recruits
- Stoking fear of an outside threat while offering a dominant protector is the symbiosis used to build a group around a leader.
How others use it
Social psychology has long studied how fear appeals and dominance hierarchies bind groups, and how authoritarian movements pair a strong leader with a frightened base. Marsh models this as a specific paired emotional symbiosis, set beside the contempt-shame symbiosis, and places it at the origin of the endogroup itself rather than treating it as one tactic among many.
