Euphoric depletion

Updated August 5, 2026

Deanimation.

Expanded explanation

The glossary entry is a single word because the two terms name one thing, the loss or depletion of life from an animus. The separate headword survives because the earlier book uses this phrasing where the later one uses deanimation, and because the euphoric framing keeps the emphasis on what has been lost rather than on the animus that lost it. What the term does in the framework is explain formation. An endoself is formed in response to severe euphoric depletion and inability to access primary euphoria, which makes depletion the cause and predation the consequence rather than the reverse. The cycle that follows is the reason Marsh treats the process as structural. A recovering negative image is at risk of forming an endoself membrane and predatory tendencies in the course of protecting themselves, which produces a cycle of abuse in which the depleted become the depleting. The same mechanism operates upward. Reflectors and negative images are created by euphoric depletion, by the negation of their individuality and worth, and the deliberate reverse of that process is used to create an endo-ideal. Sorrow is a result of euphoric depletion, which places ordinary grief on the same scale as the extreme cases. Strong endogroups produce it across a whole population, alongside guilt transference and the cognitive dissonance between endoreality and universal reality.

In Heather Marsh’s words

Marsh makes depletion the cause of predation rather than its result, which is what produces the cycle.

Examples

Cause before consequence
Depletion produces the endoself rather than the endoself producing depletion, which reverses the usual order of explanation.
The cycle of abuse
Someone recovering from the negative image position may form a membrane while protecting themselves, becoming the next source of depletion.
Manufacture in both directions
Negating individuality and worth produces reflectors and negative images, and the deliberate reverse produces an endo-ideal.

How others use it

The clinical vocabulary for the same territory is fragmented across burnout, compassion fatigue, emotional exhaustion and anhedonia, each defined by symptom rather than by cause. The cycle Marsh describes is well documented in the literature on intergenerational transmission of abuse, though the mechanisms usually proposed are learned behaviour, attachment disruption and altered stress physiology rather than depletion of a quantity. Selye's exhaustion phase is the closest single antecedent. Marsh's contribution is to make one process account for the individual case, the cycle and the population effect, which is a unification the clinical categories cannot perform because they are defined at the level of the individual patient.
