Sublated

Updated August 5, 2026

The state in which one's interactions and perception of reality are dominated by an external will.

Expanded explanation

Two things are dominated and the pairing is what makes the state hard to exit. Interactions are controlled, so what a person does is determined by another will, and perception of reality is controlled, so what they can see about their situation is determined by the same will. Someone whose actions were directed but whose perception was intact could recognize the position. Someone whose perception is also occupied cannot, which is what the endofilter and endoreality supply. Sublation disconnects the sublated person from primary anima, which is why it creates endoselves, and the only happiness available inside an endogroup is the mindless, selfless contentment of a secure reflector. Marsh's observations about the state are consistent with that account. Anger in a negative image is resistance, a closed outlet valve, and is feared, punished and exaggerated in perception, which is why the negative image are forced to smile while predators are frequently angry. The prey is locked into a monopolizing relationship with a predator and is not free to form healthier bonds or to regain power within the relationship, which is what makes the domination structural rather than merely persistent. Her recovery claim is worth holding beside this, since a sublated person can relatively easily become whole again while the endo-ideal has a far greater dependency on others, and the master is the slave to those whom they enslave.

In Heather Marsh’s words

Marsh names domination of perception alongside domination of action, which is what prevents the state from being recognized from inside.

Examples

Both at once
Directed action alone could be recognized, and directed perception is what makes the position invisible from inside.
Anger as resistance
A closed outlet valve in a negative image is feared and punished, which is why the position requires smiling.
Recovery asymmetry
A sublated person can become whole relatively easily while the endo-ideal is the more dependent party.

How others use it

Sublation is Hegel's Aufhebung, usually rendered as a simultaneous cancelling, preserving and raising in the dialectic, and Marsh's usage keeps the absorption while dropping the progressive movement, treating it as a loss rather than an advance. Coercive control describes domination of action, and epistemic injustice and false consciousness cover domination of understanding, but the two literatures rarely meet. Brainwashing and thought reform research after Lifton addresses both together. Marsh's contribution is to make the pairing definitional, so a state affecting only one of the two is something else, which sharpens a category that is otherwise applied loosely.
