Exceptional lives
Lives which are given far more value by media and society due to endo-ideal status.
Expanded explanation
The term names a measurable asymmetry and locates its cause in position rather than in circumstance. Lives close to the endo-ideal are covered, mourned and compensated, and lives at the other end are counted. That distinction is the one Marsh draws under demographics, where the individuality of the negative image is denied and its members live and die as big round numbers, as populations and as the rejections of the endo-ideal. Exceptional lives are the other side of the same ledger, and the two are not independent, since value assigned at the centre is value withdrawn from the edge. Nothing about the disparity requires anyone to hold explicit views about whose life matters. The endofilter delivers the sorting before judgement begins, so a death near the endo-ideal registers as a person and a death at the edge registers as a figure, and both feel to the observer like an accurate response to the facts. The mechanism also accounts for the durability of the pattern under criticism. Pointing out that some lives receive more coverage tends to be answered by reasons why those particular lives were more newsworthy, which is the endoreality supplying justifications rather than examining itself. Marsh's related terms make the same point at other scales, since victimhood is one of the four things that accumulate at the endo-ideal position alongside virtue, ownership and credit.
In Heather Marsh’s words
Marsh treats the disparity as an output of position rather than of anyone's stated view about whose life counts.

Examples
- Persons against figures
- A death near the centre is reported as a life and a death at the edge as a number, without anyone deciding to make the distinction.
- One ledger
- Value assigned at the centre is value withdrawn from the edge, so the two categories are produced by a single operation.
- Justifications on demand
- Criticism of the disparity is answered with reasons those particular lives were more newsworthy, which is the endoreality defending itself.
How others use it
Journalism research has documented the effect quantitatively for decades, with hierarchy of death studies showing coverage varying by nationality, race and proximity, and the phrase missing white woman syndrome names one well-known case. Susan Sontag wrote on the framing of distant suffering and on what regarding the pain of others does to the viewer, and Luc Boltanski examined how distant suffering is made presentable. Peace research has its own literature on which casualties are counted and which are estimated. Marsh's account differs by deriving the pattern from a general structure rather than from any specific prejudice, which predicts that the categories will shift with the endo-ideal rather than staying fixed to particular groups, and that criticism of the disparity will reliably generate justifications rather than correction.
