Autogenocide

Updated August 5, 2026

Genocide instigated remotely, usually through media incited sectarianism or trade of drugs or weapons to the targeted population, but performed by the population on itself.

Expanded explanation

Autogenocide is the group-scale form of a death engineered from outside, and Marsh names exactly how it is produced. The killing is done by the targeted population against itself, while the driving will sits outside it, working through two usual channels. The first is media-incited sectarianism. Deliberately manufactured hatred is pumped between parts of a population until they turn on each other, which does to a group what violation does to an individual: it destroys the connections that hold people together and replaces them with the anger-fear and contempt-shame dynamics that fracture a wider group into hostile endogroups. Once a population has been split into endogroups set against one another, the law of endoreality does the rest inside each faction, loading all guilt onto the others as negative images, so that attacking them feels righteous. The second channel is the trade of drugs or weapons into the population, supplying the material means of self-destruction directly, so the group dismantles itself through addiction, armament and internal violence. What both channels share is the routing of destruction through the population's own hands, which is what lets the instigator vanish. Sectarian media presents as organic hatred. A flood of drugs or weapons presents as an internal social problem. So the visible event is a civil war or a social collapse rather than an attack, and the true agent is easy to deny precisely because the population appears to have done it to itself. Marsh's argument is that this appearance is the weapon, and the genocide belongs to whoever manufactured the division and supplied the means, not to the people made to carry it out.

In Heather Marsh’s words

Marsh ties the group case to the same law that governs the individual one.

“all virtue, ownership, credit and victimhood are assigned to the endo-ideal and all vice, guilt and punishment are assigned to the negative image, by all committed members of the endogroup”

Examples

Manufactured sectarian hatred
Media that deliberately incites one part of a population against another until they destroy each other is the first channel Marsh names.
Supply as the weapon
Trading drugs or weapons into a targeted population so it consumes and arms itself into collapse is autogenocide by material means.

How others use it

Genocide studies distinguishes direct perpetration from incitement, and terms like proxy war, destabilisation and the deliberate flooding of a region with narcotics or arms describe externally driven internal violence. The use of media to incite mass killing is documented in the study of several twentieth-century genocides. Marsh gathers these into a single named structure defined by remote instigation and internal performance, fixing responsibility on the instigator rather than the visible participants.
