Endo-exceptionalism
Adherence to the exceptional myth of an endogroup.
Expanded explanation
The definition is short because it points at another term. An exceptional myth encourages both unjustified glorification of a group and its endo-ideal and unjustified demonization of the negative image along with other endogroups and their endo-ideals, and Marsh identifies five primary types addressing creation, leaders, superiority, persecution and destiny. Endo-exceptionalism is adherence to such a myth, which makes it the belief rather than the story. The function is defensive. If the superiority or victimhood of the endo-ideal is questioned, or anyone attempts to assign guilt to it, the exceptional myth forestalls the challenge, and it supplies the narrative that casts any opponent as the negative image. Both jobs are done by the same story, which is why the five types are not a taxonomy of themes so much as a list of the places a challenge can come from. A myth about creation covers where the group came from, one about leaders covers who speaks for it, superiority covers comparison with others, persecution covers why it has been wronged and destiny covers where it is going. Endo-exceptionalism is scale-free like the rest of the machinery. A nation, a profession, a company, a family and a movement all run the same myths, and adherence to any of them makes guilt unassignable to the endo-ideal by construction.
In Heather Marsh’s words
Marsh treats the myth as a defence mechanism, which is why she catalogues it by the challenges it deflects.
“it is the exceptional myth that forestalls any such challenge”
The Creation of Me, Them and Us
Examples
- Five places to defend
- Creation, leaders, superiority, persecution and destiny cover the directions from which a challenge to an endo-ideal can arrive.
- Guilt made unassignable
- Where the myth holds, an accusation against the endo-ideal is answered by the myth rather than by the facts.
- Scale-free
- A family, a profession and a nation all run the same myths, since the structure does not depend on size.
How others use it
National exceptionalism is the familiar case, with a substantial literature on the American version and comparable arguments about other states, and Benedict Anderson's imagined communities addressed how such narratives are produced. Social identity research documents in-group favouritism and out-group derogation experimentally, and the myth-symbol complex in nationalism studies after Anthony Smith describes the same stories Marsh catalogues. What her account adds is generality and function. The five types apply to any endogroup rather than to nations specifically, and the myth is defined by the challenge it deflects rather than by its content, which lets the same analysis run on a corporation's founding story and a country's.
