Realist (reflector)

Updated August 5, 2026

What Duchin calls a realist is a reflector of corporate or government power.

Expanded explanation

The third category in the Duchin formula and, in Marsh's reading, the same category as the idealist. Both are reflectors and what differs is which endo-ideal they reflect, the idealist reflecting the radical idea or leader and the realist reflecting corporate or government power. That is why the formula's conversion works, since turning an idealist into a realist requires only redirecting the reflection rather than changing anyone's convictions. The realist is handled differently from the radical for that reason. They do not actually want real change, so they are negotiated with by promises of small reforms to pull them back, and the instruction is to co-opt them into agreeing with industry. Marsh describes what co-optation looks like in practice and it is not bribery. Cooperating with power means submitting to power, and a realist never had any intention of opposing their endo-ideal, only of seeking a little recognition. They love validation that they are the good protester, not unreasonable and not expecting change overnight like the bad radicals, and they are given cookies and a pat on the head for their obedience. Their work will probably be taken and given to an official organization. The practical value of the category for an organizer is that it identifies who will settle, and it does so by structure rather than by suspicion, since a reflector's attachment was to recognition from a centre from the beginning.

In Heather Marsh’s words

Marsh makes the idealist and the realist one category, which is why converting between them requires no change of conviction.

Examples

Conversion without persuasion
Turning an idealist into a realist redirects the reflection rather than changing a belief, which is why the step is easy.
The good protester
Validation for being reasonable and patient is the currency, and it costs the other side nothing.
Work reassigned
A co-opted realist's contribution is commonly transferred to an official organization, which completes the capture.

How others use it

Social movement research studies co-optation and moderate flank effects, asking whether the presence of a moderate wing helps or hinders a radical one, and the professionalization of advocacy through funded organizations is well documented in the non-profit literature. Respectability politics names the strategy of seeking recognition through conformity to a dominant group's standards. Marsh's contribution is to collapse the moderate into the reflector role, which reframes moderation as an attachment to recognition rather than as a strategic judgement about what is achievable, and predicts that a moderate will settle regardless of what is on offer.
